Snow White in 'Water Babies Circus' Book

Between 1940 and 1948, D.C. Heath and Company of Boston published a series of twelve Disney-themed books, each new title being a more complex reading challenge for kids. The first book, Here They Are, has just one or two lines of text to accompany a large picture. The final book, Dumbo of the Circus, has very few pictures and a great deal of text. By targeting readers of all ages, these books were a natural addition to school libraries.

Front and Back Cover

Bambi, Pinocchio and Dumbo all got their own books in the series, but Snow White shared billing with the Silly Symphonies characters. "Snow White's Friends" appeared in the 1940 Water Babies' Circus and Other Stories. The book has four stories total and contains 78 numbered pages plus 10 additional. Measures 6.375" x 8.5". We'll only be looking at the Snow White installment.

The beautiful illustrations in this Heath series come from hand-inked cels made by the Disney artists, including Hank Porter and Tom Wood. Below is an original full 16 field, 12" x 15" nitrate cel with 5 pegholes. The Snow White image is 4" tall and appears on page 9 in the book.

In the Snow White's Friends story, the forest animals find the princess crying and lost in the woods. They lead her to the Dwarfs' cottage where they help clean. Then they cover her with a blanket after she has fallen asleep.

Crummles 'Snow White' Enamels

English enamel boxes have been around for a long time. Eighteenth century individuals would use the handmade containers "to carry snuff, sweets, and beauty spots...and courting couples made them popular as gifts betokening lasting affection." [Source: Staffordshire Enamels]

Enamel boxes continue to be popular to this day. This round example featuring a classic scene from Snow White dates from the early 1990s. Made in England by Crummles and Company, it was purchased from a gift shop in Cambridge. The box is enameled on copper and the artwork is hand painted.

While searching online for other boxes, I stumbled across this same Crummles enamel Snow White design being used on the whorl disc of a children's drop spindle.

Crummles enameled walnut whorl priced at $137 (USD). Available from Golding Fiber Tools.

Draw 50 Princesses

Front Cover

Draw 50 Princesses is, as the title suggests, a how-to book on drawing Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, and a host of other princess folk. That's not all. The learn-through-visuals style book also contains a royal court of other mythical characters including kings, queens, wizards, dragons, fairies, magic wands, goblets, and even Romeo and Juliet.

Artist Lee J. Ames got his first job at Walt Disney Studios when he was eighteen. That was back in 1939. He won a contest that Disney was running to find new artists. Lee headed to Los Angeles and worked "in a minor capacity" on Fantasia and Pinocchio. He missed his home, however, and after only three months, moved back. Yet, that was just the start of his drawing career.

Ames worked at animation, comics, advertising, teaching, and illustrating. He also authored over 35 books, mostly the Draw 50 series which to date have sold more than two million copies. He says in his bio...
"All [these] have helped me happily avoid facing reality."

A happy free spirit, Lee passed away in June of 2011 at the age of 90.
